Distance runner on the track team, specializing in the two-mile … played center for three seasons on the varsity football team, a “light” man who was noted for his toughness … made a huge mark as a high school track coach, receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Louisiana Track and Field Coaches’ Association … renowned journalist Jerry Byrd said Turner had the most impact on track and field in the state of Louisiana … coached champion relay teams at Ouachita High before leading Columbia High and Byrd High to a total of 11 state team titles (9 at Byrd) … while Turner’s teams excelled at every event, his relays were of particular note. At one time, Turner coached 10 of the state’s 11 fastest times in history in the mile relay.
