McCann never played for a losing team from 1955-59 and was captain of the team as a senior in 1958-59 under coach Huey Cranford. McCann is regarded as one of the great leaders of that era of Demon basketball. In his junior season, the Demons won the Gulf States Conference championship and beat LSU 103-73.

His leadership skills were put to good use after his graduation from Northwestern. McCann was a high school basketball coach for 20 years, winning state championships in 1967-68 and 1968-69 at Baton Rouge-Redemptorist. He also coached the winning East team in the 1968 state high school all-star game, making him one of a select few to play for the winning team in that game and later coach a team to victory. McCann later served three terms as basketball chairman of the Louisiana High School Coaches Association.
