A four-year letterman, Burton played running back on offense and defensive back on defense. He was a three-year All-Gulf States Conference selection and made the NAIA All American team at safety in his senior season …helped the 1962 Demons win the GSC championship … after each of his final three seasons, Burton was voted the Demons’ Best Defensive Back … as a senior, he was also voted the Best Offensive Back and shared team Most Valuable Player honors with another future N-Club Hall of Famer, Sammy Joe Odom … Burton led the team in rushing his senior year … he was signed by the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and played for them in 1964-65 … went into teaching and coaching, serving Shreveport’s Byrd High School as head coach and athletic director, and in the same capacities at Northwood, which named its football stadium after him.
