Baird, a Baton Rouge native who played for coach Rickey McCalister's Lady Demons, was the first All-American in Northwestern softball history. A catcher, she was the Southland Conference Player of the Year as a freshman and a junior, the Louisiana Athletic Directors Association Player of the Year three times and the All-Louisiana Co-Player of the Year as a junior and senior. From 1989-92, Baird compiled a career .327 batting average with 9 home runs, an SLC-record 45 doubles and 117 RBI. She was a third-team coaches' All-America selection as a junior in 1991 when she hit .341 with 5 home runs, 14 doubles and 44 RBI along with a .992 fielding percentage and 12 stolen bases in 16 tries while leading the Lady Demons to the SLC championship. Her number 27 jersey was retired by NSU three years ago.
