A 1996 inductee in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, Ledet was the Demons’ first football All-American (1938) and became a dynamic track and field coach and an iconic football assistant under coaches Harry Turpin and Jack Clayton … a guard and linebacker, Ledet was a Little All-America selection who spurned a contract offer from the Philadelphia Eagles to be assistant coach on the school’s first unbeaten team in 1939, while also serving as freshman coach … in 13 years (1952-64), he led his track and field teams to five straight (1953-57) Gulf States Conference championships and was a half-point away from a sixth in 1958 … Ledet was named GSC “Coach of the Year” an unprecedented five straight years … his teams also had three second-place finishes and two thirds … as assistant coach in football from 1935-1965, he helped the Demons win or share five conference titles and was pivotal in the careers of Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Jackie Smith and LSHOF members Charlie Hennigan and Charlie Tolar.
