Sims earned a total of 15 letters during a four-year career at Northwestern from 1925-1929.  he captained the football team for two years and started at quarterback all four seasons, while also earning four letters in baseball, football and basketball and three letters in track.

Sims was the club's batting champion three times in baseball and was awarded the coveted Gold Baseball Trophy for batting excellence during his senior year, along with being an outstanding shortstop and second baseman.

He also ran the half mile for the track squad and lost only two races during his career, losing in his first race as a freshman and his last in the SIAA championships as a junior.

Sims, who began his football career as a halfback and was thrust into the quarterback slot when former star "Rags" Turpin was injured, served as a teacher and principal at Olla High School for 40 years before retiring.
