Stockton, a Tioga native, was a two-time NCAA Division I Track and Field All-American in the javelin. He still holds the state collegiate record with a 271-10 throw that earned him second at the 1983 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Stockton was third at the 1981 NCAA meet, and his second and third-place finishes helped Northwestern rank in the top 20 of the Division I team scoring at those national meets.  All-Louisiana all four years he competed under coaches Jerry Dyes and Leon Johnson, Stockton was 11th at the 1982 NCAAs and 13th  at the 1985 NCAAs. He was fourth at the 1983 USA Track and Field Championships before an injury derailed his strong bid for the 1984 USA Olympic Team.
