Cook had his number 10 retired during the annual Demon Baseball Opening Day Banquet on February 7, 2009, becoming only the third baseball player at NSU's history to receive that honor ... Cook was a record shattering pitcher, pitching 37 games and winning 29, a NSU school record that remains standing almost 60 years later (as of 2018) ... a three-time All-Gulf States Conference pitcher, Cook led the nation in wins in 1957, earning league MVP honors … nicknamed the "Iron Man,” Cook pitched and won two doubleheaders during the 1957 season, and three wins were shutouts … career ERA was 1.91 with an average of seven strikeouts per game, and in three seasons he walked only 20 batters … played semi-pro for the Homer (La.) Oilers in the Big Eight Conference, posting an 8-4 record … had offers from the Giants, Tigers, Athletics, Yankees and the Cardinals, but the right-hander decided with the advice of his father, to remain in college and earn a diploma.
