Hailed as one of Northwestern's greatest tennis players prior to the resurgence of the sport during the modern era, Bell won numerous other tournaments and individual matches during his career. He also teamed  Jack Fisher on NSU's No. 1 doubles team, and they also won a conference championship.

Bell also played wingback in football for four years, including a key role on NSU's undefeated 1939 football team which is one of only two unbeaten teams in school history.  He also won the college title in golf during his career.
