Considered by Coach Jerry Dyes as one of the best athletes he ever coached, Barrier was a contender for the decathlon for the 1980 Olympics but the USA withdrew from the Moscow Games and did not conduct Olympic Trials … according to Dyes, Barrier had best marks of 230-0 in the javelin, a 6-10 high jump and nearly 17 feet in the pole vault, along with 14.4 in the 110 meter hurdles, and 23-0 in the long jump, 10.9 100m dash, 50.0 in the 400.  Entered USATF meet in Wichita and finished third, and qualified for the national meet, but the NCAA Championships were three weeks later and that proved to be too close as Barrier scored 200 points under his best at that meet.
