Surane, a Shreveport-Loyola product, was a four-year starting second baseman in baseball at NSU from 1987-90. He was a first team All-Southland Conference second baseman who set seven school records as a senior in 1990 under first-year head coach Jim Wells, when the Demons posted their first winning season since 1978 and went 38-13, including 20 straight wins to open the year. Surane hit .302 that season with 3 homers, 11 doubles and 24 stolen bases (fourth in the SLC).

Playing in a school-record 200 career games, he hit .281 with 29 doubles, 56 RBI, and 52 stolen bases, ranking eighth all-time in NSU history in steals. Surane's 24 stolen bases in 1990 ranks as the seventh most in a single-season in school history. He started in a record 151 consecutive games, including the last 51 as the Demons led the NCAA in 1990 with a .981 team fielding percentage. At one point, the Demons went 14 straight games without an error.

Surane fielded .984 while setting single-season (44) and career (118) marks for runs scored, and the career hits mark with 173. He set the career standard for at-bats (623) and walks drawn (113). Surane went on to play minor league ball with the Atlanta Braves, and was a business graduate who has gone on to leadership positions with national corporations.
