Wells was an undergraduate manager at Northwestern who returned as head coach in 1990 to reverse the fortunes of a long-struggling baseball program … after 13 years without a winning record, Wells steered NSU to 20 straight wins at the outset of his first season and altered the baseball landscape at NSU … went 192-89 (.683) in five seasons, winning three Southland Conference titles and taking the Demons to NCAA Regionals in 1991 and 1994 … NSU ranked among college baseball's top 40 winningest programs from 1990-2005 … he moved to the Southeastern Conference in 1995 and revived a downtrodden Alabama program …  led the Crimson Tide to the College World Series in his second year, then earned national coach of the year in 1997 when Alabama lost to LSU in the national championship game … led Tide to three CWS, two SEC titles, three SEC West titles and six SEC Tournament titles … overall 817-411 career record after retiring in 2009.
