A four-year letterman in two sports, Howell became an impactful assistant football coach, along with head track coach (1965-66) and golf coach (1958-59) … was a decorated World War II veteran (Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Presidential Citation) who participated in the D-Day Invasion at Normandy, France and the Battle of the Bulge … was defensive coordinator and offensive line coach on staffs of Harry Turpin and Jack Clayton …  Demons won Gulf States Conference football titles in 1957, 1958, 1962 and 1966 …  a great recruiter, he discovered Jackie Smith at Kentwood High School in a track meet and helped persuade him to run track and play football for the Demons … turned down offers to join the LSU football staff in 1958 and the New Orleans Saints in 1967 … was a professor in health and physical education at NSU from 1967-86.
