A three-time All-Gulf States Conference selection, earning first-team honors in 1968 and 1970, Phillips set numerous Demon records, including season marks for receiving touchdowns (10 in 1968), best season kickoff return average (27.9) in 1970. and in a career (25.2), along with a 42.3 yards per reception average in a 1968 game (3 catches, 127 yards vs. Stephen F. Austin)… originally signed as a defensive back, Phillips spent the 1967 season as an offensive back before moving to a wide receiver … when he finished his playing days, he held 14 school records, including 35 catches for 642 yards as a redshirt sophomore and 1,484 career receiving yards (77 catches) … in his senior season, he played on defense as a linebacker in passing situations … on Top 100 Demons of the Century roster picked to kick off the 2007 football centennial celebration.
