An iconic figure in Demon football, Turpin was considered perhaps the best offensive back of the 1920s before he returned to his alma mater as head coach … his nickname stemmed from his snappy wardrobe … held the Demon football job longer than anyone, serving 22 seasons in charge … was 99-91-12 (.520) as head coach … guided Louisiana Normal, which became Northwestern State College during his tenure, into the Gulf States Conference … in 1939, his team went 11-0 and won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship … NSU's football stadium carries his name.
