Clayton’s coaching feats at his alma mater are legendary … his football teams from 1957-66 won four Gulf States Conference championships, then he steered the baseball team to  a GSC title and NCAA regional play in 1967 and a strong 1968 season (second in the GSC) … his two-year baseball record was 30-16-2 … was 58-35-2 (.611) in 10 seasons as football coach, culminating with the unbeaten 9-0 1966 team that held the NAIA’s No. 1 ranking at the end of the regular season … won GSC football crowns in his first two seasons (1957, 1959) and also in 1962 and ’66 … was highly successful as head football coach at Western Kentucky before coming home, and is in WKU’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
