2007 PRESEASON ALL-SLC SECOND TEAM
After enduring a frustrating 2005 while academically ineligible, the fiercely competitive Martin is back with a vengeance ready to play a significant role on the defensive front. An outstanding pass rusher with strong leadership ability, he will play behind Charlie Brooks at end and also figures to be a leader on special teams.
Honors: NSU Athletic Honor Roll, Silver 3.000-3.499, Fall 2005
2006: Tied for the team lead with eight tackles for a loss and second with 2 1/2 sacks... ranked sixth on the squad with 42 tackles, 29 solos... season-high six tackles each against Sam Houston State (Oct. 7) and at Southeastern Louisiana (Oct. 14)... had one interception, that coming with a 23 yard return at Nicholls in a 9-0 win (Oct. 21)... finished the year with six quarterback hurries and three pass break ups... recorded a safety against Texas State (Oct. 28).
2005: Did not play but was on the scout team.
2004: Recorded 15 tackles in eight games as a redshirt freshman... had two tackles for a loss and one-and-a-half sacks... had a career-best six hits with a tackle for a loss and a half sack against Oklahoma Panhandle... two hits with a TFL and a sack at Montana in the 1-AA playoffs.
2003: Redshirted.
Martin in High School: An All-State selection at St. Thomas More for a 10-2 team that reached the state quarterfinals... also named All-Acadiana, All-Lafayette Parish and All-District while being named team captain as a senior... All-District and second-team All-Acadiana as a junior for a 12-2 team that reached the semifinals in the state playoffs... finished fourth in the state in power-lifting as a junior in the 198-pound class.
Martin's Personal: 23 years old, 10/25/84... full named is Raymond Edward Martin III... his mother is Denise Castille... he has a brother, James (18), and a sister, Emily (11)... his father, Ray, was a two-time All-Southland Conference player and a four-year letterman at McNeese who was drafted by the Oakland Raiders... his father played in the inaugural Independence Bowl in 1976, and also in the 1979 Indy Bowl against Syracuse... he was an All-Louisiana pick in 1979... Ray plans to attend mortuary school in Houston.
