2009 PRESEASON ALL-SLC FIRST TEAM
Riggs enters his senior year with lots of production to his credit and potential for an all-star campaign. He has adjusted well to the new defensive scheme. He has the speed and hips to play in the secondary but the size and hitting ability to play linebacker. Riggs also has a knack for blocking kicks and some experience returning kicks, and will loom large on special teams once again.
2008-09 Honors: NSU athletic honor roll, spring (3.0-3.49).
2008: Third on the team with 72 tackles and team leader with three interceptions, two of those for touchdowns… had one sack and two tackles for a loss… also had seven pass breakups, one fumble recovery, a forced fumble, blocked a kick and three quarterback hurries… had 37 solo tackles in playing all 12 games… had two games where he recorded double digits in tackles… recorded a career-high 13 stops in the season opener against Texas A&M-Commerce to go along with a sack and tackle for a loss… also picked off a pass in that game and returned it 29 yards for a score… had 10 tackles at Baylor with a pass breakup… recorded nine stops, six of those solos, against McNeese State… had an interception at Stephen F. Austin in the season finale and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown. 2008 Preseason All-SLC First Team
2007: All-SLC second team honors… led the team with three blocked kicks and tied for the team lead with three interceptions to go with 67 tackles - third highest on the squad... had 4.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, six pass breakups, one quarterback hurry, and a forced fumble... collected 10 tackles each against Southeastern Louisiana and Texas State... blocked two kicks against Stephen F. Austin... his exceptional effort and blazing recovery speed saved NSU 14 points in a near-miss of an upset of unbeaten McNeese State on 11/10 … Riggs set the tone for the Demons on the game's first play, racing downfield to knock the ball loose just shy of the goaline, and out of the end zone for a touchback, as McNeese receiver Carlese Franklin was about to finish a 61-yard catch and run for a touchdown … later in the first half, Riggs saved another touchdown with a similar play, catching tailback Kris Bush by the ankles to halt a 53-yard run that would have been a 75-yard touchdown. The Cowboys missed a field goal four snaps later... also returned five kicks for 115 yards.
2006: Fourth on the team with 48 tackles… had 3 1/2 tackles for a loss and one sack… picked off two passes with 31 return yards… had a season-high eight tackles with 1 1/2 tackles for loss in helping the Demons post a 9-0 win at Nicholls State (Oct. 21)… seven stops and an interception at Baylor (Sept. 9)… picked off his second pass against McNeese State (Nov. 11).
Prior to NSU: Redshirted at Ole Miss.
Riggs in High School: All-State selection by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association who also picked up All-District and All-Southwest Louisiana honors... rated as the No. 16 overall player in Louisiana by SuperPrep... selected as the nation's No. 41 safety and Louisiana's No. 16 player overall by rivals.com... named to Top 20 team by New Orleans Times-Picayune and to Top 24 team by the Baton Rouge Advocate... ranked as the No. 5 player in Louisiana by Dandy Don... ranked No. 93 on Mobile Register Super Southeast 120 list... was selected to participate in U.S. Army All-America Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, but chose not to participate... as a senior, rushed for 1,489 yards and 12 touchdowns, and passed for 526 yards and 10 touchdowns... had nine career pass interceptions... earned three letters in football as a quarterback-defensive back... also earned three letters in basketball and four in track... averaged 13.8 points in basketball... won district titles in long jump and triple jump in track, while also being a member of the 4x100 and 4x200 district champs... received All-District honors in track.
Riggs' Personal: Born Dec. 18, 1986... son of Gary Riggs, Sr. and RoXanne Riggs... a brother, Dillon, and two sisters, Crystal and Shontell... cousin, Kenny Mixon, played football for LSU and the Minnesota Vikings...majoring in business administration… full name is Gary Ledon Riggs, Jr… nickname is “Blue Boy.”
