Records Watch
Heard enters the 2009 season with a chance to set school career records in wins, most innings pitched, most strikeouts, and most games started. He enters the season with 30 starts, needed 15 to tie the record of 45 set by Dennis Choate from 1972-75. He’s thrown 248.1 innings, closing in on the record of 319.2 set by David Balcer from 1996-99. He has struck out 177 batters in his career, nearing the record of 235 set by Balcer from ?96-’99. And he has 19 career wins, needing 10 to tie the record of 29 set by Billie Roy Cook from 1956-59.
2008 Season
Led the team with a 7-5 record and 3.82 ERA... started in 14 games and had two complete games... threw a team-high 94.1 innings and struck out 66 batters while walking only 20... struck out a season-high eight batters against Eastern Illinois and Texas-San Antonio... threw a complete game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, getting the win after allowing just two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts... started the season 4-0 and was 4-5 in conference play.
2007 Season
Team leader with seven wins (7-5) and second of the starters with a 4.92 ERA... was 6-3 with a 4.97 ERA in 10 conference starts... threw a team-high 100.2 innings with 71 strikeouts to just 31 walks... started 15 games and threw one complete game... struck out a career-high 10 batters in getting a win over Stephen F. Austin (Apr. 5)... threw a complete 9-inning game in a 5-1 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Mar. 16)... allowed just one run in the game and four hits while striking out five... won his last two starts of the season.
2006 Season
Finished the year with a perfect 5-0 mark... appeared in 21 games with one start... had a 4.39 ERA in 53.1 innings pitched with 40 strikeouts... went 3-0 with a 3.18 ERA in conference games... also had three hits in 27 at bats... longest outing on the mound was a 6-inning stint during a 5-2 win at Stephen F. Austin on Apr. 15... had a career-high 5 strikeouts in 4.1 innings while allowing just one run in a 5-4 win over Louisiana-Monroe on May 19... picked up a 9-8 win over Texas State in the SLC tournament.
High School
Lettered three years in baseball and three in football at Airline High School... Helped his teams to the state playoffs in both baseball and football his sophomore through senior seasons... All-District as a shortstop with a .386 batting average his junior year... Also an all-district wide receiver that season... Senior year earned all-district and all-city as a pitcher, hitting .380 while compiling an 8-2 record on the mound... All-district and all-area wide receiver... Graduated with a 3.3 gpa and a member of the FCA... played for Toby Todd.
Personal
Born December 19, 1986... son of Dennis Heard... one brother, Paige, who is a member of the United State Coast Guard, and a sister, Cindy... majoring in general studies with a minor in psychology... would like to become a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Coast Guard.
