NATCHITOCHES – School-record-setters John Shaughnessy and Andrea Nedorostova were among 10 Northwestern State student-athletes graduating with high academic honors Friday as 46 NSU sports competitors and staff members received degrees at the university's 2013 spring commencement  exercises in Prather Coliseum.
 
Three members of the Demon basketball team's 2013 NCAA Tournament team graduated:  players Oscar “O.J.” Evans and David Ulak, and manager Rickey Doyle.  Teammate James Hulbin graduated in midseason in December, while 2012 senior Louis Ellis also received his degree Friday.
 
Shaughnessy, a kicker who was the 2012 Southland Conference Football Student-Athlete of the Year and the 2012-13 Southland Conference Steve McCarty Citizenship Award winner, graduated cum laude (grade point average between 3.5-3.69). He set a school record with 12 consecutive field goals made as a junior.
 
Nedorostova was one of the university's top graduates, earning summa cum laude (GPA between 3.90 and a perfect 4.0) honors. Nedorostova is NSU's career doubles wins leader and finishes fourth all-time in school history in singles wins.
 
She completed her tennis career Friday as the captain of a Lady Demon squad that played Alabama in the NCAA Team Championships, receiving her diploma from coach Patric DuBois after she, her parents, university Vice President Jerry Pierce, and teammates watched a special presentation by NSU President Dr. Randall Webb during the morning commencement.
 
Also receiving summa cum laude honors Friday were soccer standout Theresa Halle and Chris Lanier of the cross country and track and field teams.
 
Earning magna cum laude recognition (GPA between 3.70-3.89) were three cross country and track and field competitors, Sarah Emory, Kyle Lessig and Becca Meehan.
 
Joining Shaughnessy among the cum laude graduates were cross country and track and field athlete Allison Fontenot, Marissa Lees of the Lady Demon soccer team, and former Lady Demon tennis competitor Lauren Peters.
 
A remarkable 12 members of the women's track and field program received diplomas Friday, with five earning honor roll status with a 3.0 GPA along with Emory and Meehan.
 
Three members of the Lady Demon softball team, all honor roll graduates, could not march at graduation because they were competing across the street at the Lady Demon Softball Complex and winning twice Friday to advance to Saturday's championship game of the Southland Conference Tournament. Wearing uniforms and gloves in lieu of caps and gowns were Brooke Boening, Jordan Palmer and Kylie Roos.
 
Football player Jake Bryan graduated on the honor roll after being voted Mr. NSU earlier this year by the student body.
 
Two former student-athletes, Akilah Givens Issac and Bianca Schulz, were particularly noteworthy among those receiving master's degrees.
 
Issac graduated with a perfect 4.0 with a master's in educational leadership despite giving birth a few weeks ago to the son she had with the late Ricky Issac, a 2011 Demon football senior who was killed in the line of duty last December as a Natchitoches Parish sheriff's deputy.
 
Schulz, a magna cum laude graduate in 2011, is the career singles victory leader for Lady Demon tennis.
 
Demon basketball coach Mike McConathy was also honored during the morning commencement for becoming Louisiana's all-time men's collegiate coaching victories leader.  Dr. Webb presented a commemorative plate to McConathy.
