MONROE – Highlighted by winning performances from
Jasmine Frazier in the women's 100 meter hurdles and
Cedric Paul in the shot put, the Northwestern State track and field teams combined for 17 podium finishes Saturday in the Warhawk Classic at UL Monroe's new Groseclose Track.
NSU recorded nine seconds and six thirds among 25 top-eight performances in a meet including regional foes such as ULM, Louisiana Tech, Grambling, McNeese and Southern Mississippi.
Frazier ran 14.52 to win and Paul threw 58-4 to capture the shot title.
Among the silver medalists for NSU were five throwers.
Collin Milton placed second for the third time in four meets and set a personal record of 195-9 in the men's javelin.
Sabrina Thiels threw 123-10 in the women's javelin.
Gerianna Lyons posted a personal record 153-3 in the women's hammer. In the shot put competitions, the Lady Demons'
Destiney Myers had a 44-6 ¼ mark and
Kyrin Tucker threw 56-1 ¼ in the men's field.
Cori Runnels threw 149-1 in the women's discus and also was fourth in the shot put (42-4).
Tucker also had a third-place performance in the discus (162-8).
"Collin had a good day. I was happy with his mark, but he still has room to grow," head coach Mike Heimerman said. "Gerianna had a great performance in the hammer and she could have thrown further. Even so, I am happy that all of our athletes excelled despite facing windy and rainy conditions for the second straight week."
Lady Demon jumpers
Jasmyn Steels and
Fabriana Nation competed in the horizontal jumps and had top-five finishes in both events. Steels was third in the long jump (18-4 ½) and fourth in the triple (36-9 3/4), and Nation placed third in the triple (36-11 ¾) and finished fourth in the long (18-3).
Jasmine Roberson cleared 5-3 in the high jump for third in her second collegiate meet.
Jasmine Hall ran 24.91 to take third in the women's 200 and
Brandon Lewis-Graham was third in the men's 1500 with his best time as a Demon, 4:09.56.
Tamara Style,
Sydney Cowgill,
Adam Courville, and
Kylie Nodorft were NSU runners that came in sixth. Style ran 58.58 in the women's 400, alongside a 2:29.97 in the women's 800 for Cowgill, a PR of 2:01.118 in the 800 for Courville, and 25.87 in the women's 200 for Nodorft.
Corwin Archield and Jeter rounded out the sixth-place finishes. Archield threw 49-5 ¾ in the men's shot put and Jeter jumped 46-0 in the triple.
Deylon Key,
Isabella Hudson,
Emily Sitarz, Paul and Myers finished seventh.
Isabella Hudson had two seventh-place marks. Hudson ran 2:30.01 in the women's 1500 and 5:05.70 in the 1500, both of which are PRs. Key covered 22-1 ½ in the men's long jump, Paul threw 137-9 in the men's discus, while Myers threw 126-6 in the women's discus, and
Emily Sitarz ran 12:27.01 in the 3000.
Lyons,
Keidrick Haynes, and
Sarah Lewis posted eighth-place finishes: Lyons in the women's shot put (37-10), Haynes in the men's long jump (21-11 ½), and Lewis in the women's 400 hurdles (1:07.04).
Most of NSU's elite sprinters competed this weekend at the Texas Invitational in Austin. The entire squad unites next Saturday at the LSU Alumni Gold in Baton Rouge, then competes at home April 28 in the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational.
