Biography

In 1992-93: Exploded for 20 points, 7 rebounds in just 14 minutes of a 114-89 homecourt win over Sam Houston on 2/13/93. Speed hit 4-of4 from 3-point range, 7-of-14 FGA and 2-of-3 FTs. He had 11 points in 18 minutes vs. Arkansas Baptist in his first double-figure scoring output and his most extensive playing time of the season. His next highest scoring output was 9 points in 11 minutes at Texas-San Antonio. He handed out four assists in the homecourt win over Stephen F. Austin. Speed sank 73.9% of his FTs. He played behind Larry Terry, who led the team in minutes played.

In 1991-92: was not a member of the squad as a freshman but did play on a an intramural team.

At Tioga HS: All-State in Class AAA. Speed was the Most Valuable Player in 1990-91 in District 4-AAA -- a league which produced four Division I signees, including one to Connecticut. He played in the 1991 Louisiana High School Coaches All-Star Game. At Tioga as a senior in disciplined scheme run by Coach Buck Williams, Speed averaged 28 points and 10 rebounds as the Indians went 17-12 and reached the state playoffs. He shot 79 percent from the free throw line and 54 percent from 3-point range while making All-Cenla on the Alexandria Daily Town Talk's annual all-area team. Speed helped Tioga to four straight state playoff appearances and an overall record of 69-38. He was honorable mention all-district as a junior when the district produced the two state finalists. Speed also earned three letters in track and field. As a senior, he was the district and regional high jump champion and was fourth in the Class AAA high jump at the state meet. He was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Personal: Michael is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Speed. He has two brothers, Eric and Steve. A home economics major, he has an eye on possibly playing overseas after his college career ends and wants to "be the best I can possibly be at what I do." He is nicknamed "Lil' Speed."
