High School: Dothan made the State playoffs two of three years and reached the second round in Koonce's junior year. The team went 61-23 in his three-year stay. He was named all-tournament in his sophomore through senior years along with two sportsmanship awards. Charles played for Gasden in his senior season, and acted as team captain. He averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks each game. His Gasden coach, Danny Kimble, who has produced some SEC talents, calls Koonce "as good as anybody I've had," Koonce also lettered two years in football and one year in track.

Personal: Koonce has a 3.0 gpa, and received an honorable mention for his academic standing in high school. Charles was involved in Spanish Club, and was secretary of the Baptist Youth board at Greater Beulah Baptist Church. He is the third of four children of Charles and Barbara Koonce.
