In 1990-91: Scherer became first Demon basketballer to make the national Division I Academic All-America ballot, one of only 40 players nationwide on the slate. He set Demon single-season record for 3-pointers made (80) and most consecutive FTs made (29), falling 3 shy of tying SLC record. He was the only player to start every game and led in minutes pg (37), scoring (17 ppg) and FT aim (74.5%). He shot 80% on FTs in SLC play and hit 45.4% (44-97) of his 3s. Scherer shot 53% (9-17) on FGs and remarkable 95% (21-22) on FTs in the last 3 minutes (and OT) of games. He ranked fifth overall in the SLC in 3-point aim and fifth in scoring, and was held under 10 points only three times. Scherer scored 20 or more 11 times, including 7 of 14 SLC games. He made 8-12 shots in his first game as a Demon, then won the Dr. Hustle Award at Baylor's Dr. Pepper Invitational. He had 25 points, hitting 5-9 on 3s, at UTA on Jan. 17, then got 27 two nights later at North Texas. He had the go-ahead basket in OT to key a win over Stephen F. Austin on Jan. 24 and scored 23, including 5-8 on 3s, two nights later vs. SW Texas. His streak of 29 FTs made ended Feb. 7 at SFA. He had 26 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists to key a win at Nicholls on Feb. 11, and continued his hot hand against UTA (27 points, 5-9 3s) and UNT (29 points, 8 rebounds) on Feb. 14-16. His 22 points led a win at Sam Houston (Feb. 21) but he was held scoreless from the field (0-12) and to just 2 FTs two days later at SWT. He rallied in the season-ending game, hitting 5 3s to break the single-season mark and scoring 22 points vs. Nicholls.

In 1989-90: Sat out the season after transferring from East Carolina.

At East Carolina (1988-89): As a freshman, he played in 20 of 29 games, including 17 of the first 19, and averaged 10 minutes and 1.8 points.

At Grissom HS: The 1987-88 Alabama Class 6A Player of the Year as chosen by both the state sportswriters and state coaches association. Scherer was a McDonald's All-American, leading Grissom to the state championship, scoring 38 in the championship game. He was named to the prestigious Dixie Dozen honorable mention all-star list compiled by The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel. As a senior, he averaged 21 ppg and made 82% of his free throws and 55% of his 3-pointers. Scherer also had a 28-3 record as a pitcher on the baseball team.

Personal: James Michael Scherer Jr. is the son of Mike and Beverly Scherere adn has a younger sister, Julia.  He is majoring in computer information systems with a 3.25 gpa, Scherer is scheduled to graduate in December 1992 and plans to join his dad's business. His life's ambition is to play acoustic guitar in his own country band.
