Williams captures third, Jackson takes fourth in day one of Southland Indoor Championships

NORMAN, Okla. – Sophomore Emmanuel Williams placed third in the men's long jump and junior Keona Jackson took fourth in the women's weight throw to highlight day one of the Southland Conference Indoor Championships on Friday at Oklahoma's Mosier Indoor Complex.
 
Williams registered a personal-best mark 24-01 in the long jump and Jackson threw for personal-best 55-08.25 in the weight throw.
 
The Demons had eight runners qualify for finals and the Lady Demons had three athletes qualify.
 
Junior Justin Walker had the fastest qualifying time in the 60m dash (6.75) and freshman Hanoj Carter grabbed the top spot in the 200m dash (21.81).
 
Senior Kendal Taylor was second in the preliminary round of the 200m with a time of 21.84 and fourth in the 60m at 6.88.
 
Walker also qualified in the 200m, finishing 8th with a time of 22.16.
 
Austin McCauslin had a breakout performance in the 800m, recording a personal-best and second best qualifying time of 1:57.96.
 
Brent Giddens qualified in the 60m hurdles with a fifth-best time of 8.39 and Keenan Jackson placed eighth in the 400m preliminaries at 49.56.
 
Sophomore Aaron Williams recorded points for the Demons, finishing sixth in the long jump with a leap of 23-04.50, and the distance medley relay team of Matt Rodell, Albert Gladney, Mitch Landry and Austin McCauslin finished seventh.
 
Qualifiers for the Lady Demons include Quiana Griffin, Consuela Lindsay and Karensa Ellis.
 
Griffin and Lindsay were fourth and sixth in the 400m dash with times of 57.39 and 57.71, respectively.
 
Ellis finished fifth in the 800m preliminaries with a time of 2:19.56.
 
Janae Allen had a mark of 54-04.50 in the weight throw, placing sixth, and the women's distance medley team of Ellis, Madison Morton, Aly Coughlin and Sarah Emory placed eighth in the 4x400 with a time of 13:05.64.
 
At the end of day one Sam Houston State leads the women's standings with 52.5 points and Stephen F. Austin leads the men with 42 points. The Lady Demons are currently in eighth with nine points and the Demons stand in seventh, registering 11 points.
 
Both squads will continue competition on Saturday.
