DENTON, Texas – Looking to finish the season on a high note, the Northwestern State softball team will play a doubleheader at North Texas on Saturday in the final series of the year.
Game one will begin at 3 p.m. and the night cap will start 30 minutes after the completion of the first game.
Sophomore Tara McKenney has shined at the plate for NSU (19-29, 7-13 SLC) by knocking four consecutive multi-hit games. In her latest outing, she ripped three hits against Louisiana Tech on Wednesday to record her sixth three-hit game of the season. The sophomore hits for a .365 average on the year which ranks seventh in the Southland Conference.
Junior Kylie Roos has been NSU's work-horse on the mound this season and leads the team with eight wins and a 3.18 ERA. She has tossed 11 complete games and four complete-game shutouts in 21 starts.
The series will mark the last time seniors Kelee Grimes, Samantha Roberts and NSU Student-Athlete of the Month Tiffany Ward will play in a Lady Demon uniform. Roberts is coming off a two-hit game against LTU and leads the team with seven homers, 23 RBI and a .511 slugging percentage on the year.
UNT (24-24-1, 13-10-1 Sun Belt) is on a four-game winning streak, including a 3-2 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday. The Mean Green are led by senior Maddelyn Fraley who hits for a .331 average with 11 homers and 40 RBI.
Brittany Simmons and Ashley Kirk are UNT's probable starters. Simmons (10-10) boasts a 2.50 ERA in 151.1 innings, while Kirk (11-11) has a 2.54 ERA in 138 frames.
The Lady Demons will look to take the all-time lead in head-to-head play against the Mean Green, as the teams are split 3-3 in program history.
