THIBODAUX – The Northwestern State softball team split a doubleheader with Nicholls State, 1-0 NSU and 5-1 Nicholls, Friday evening in Southland Conference softball at the Colonel Complex.

Kylie Roos (7-10) tossed a gem in the first game for NSU (18-25, 6-10 SLC) as she earned the win by throwing her fourth complete-game shutout of the season. She struck out five and didn't allow a Colonel (11-26, 5-7 SLC) base runner to reach past second base.

The Lady Demons scored the decisive run in the first inning. Tara McKenney led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Roos. Brianna Rodriguez came through with a two-out RBI single to rightfield to score McKenney and give NSU the edge, 1-0.

Rodriguez also singled in the sixth inning to register her seventh multi-hit game of the season. Blair Beard tallied her 10th multi-hit game of the year as she finished two-for-four with a pair of singles to leftfield.

The Colonels threatened in the bottom of the seventh after a walk and a single put runners on first and second with no outs. Roos got out of it by recording a fly out and a pair of strikeouts to end the game.

Katie Moulder (5-13) took the loss for Nicholls after allowing one run on six hits. The Lady Demons outhit the Colonels, 6-5.

NSU's last five wins have all been by shutout.

In game two, Nicholls took advantage of three Lady Demon errors in the first inning to jump ahead, 3-0. The Colonels added on in the sixth with a two-run homer by Rachel Moore to make it 5-0.

NSU scored in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Cassandra Barefield. The Lady Demons had a pair of base runners when Samantha Roberts singled through the left side and Rodriguez walked.

Roberts also singled in the fifth inning to pick up her sixth multi-hit game of the year.

Ashton Bennett (6-8) earned the win for Nicholls, tossing a four-hit complete-game and struck out six. Sara Aasness (1-2) pitched five innings for NSU and struck out a pair while allowing three earned runs. Brooke Boening struck out two batters in an inning of relief.

The Lady Demons will return home on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Southeastern La. beginning at 4.
