HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Northwestern State softball team dropped a doubleheader to Sam Houston State, 9-1 (6) and 4-3, on Sunday at Bearkat Softball Field.
In the first game, Tara McKenney registered her fourth three-hit game and 13th multi-hit game of the season for NSU (13-23, 2-8 SLC) as she finished three-for-three. Though, SHSU (12-15, 6-2 SLC) tallied a timely 10 hits, compared to NSU's seven.
In the night cap, the teams were tied 1-1 in the fourth inning when Cali Burke and Cheyenne DeLaGarza smashed consecutive RBI singles to put NSU ahead, 3-1.
SHSU got the runs back in the bottom of the inning on a bizarre wild pitch. With two outs and runners on second and third, Kelee Grimes misfired as the ball ended up hitting the fence behind the Bearkats dugout scoring both runs and tying the game, 3-3.
The Bearkats scored the decisive run in the sixth frame on a RBI single by Ashley Isabell. Meme Quinn (2-2) picked up the win for SHSU, while Sara Aasness (0-1) recorded the loss after allowing one run in 2.1 innings.
The Lady Demons scored the opening run of the game in the first inning on a RBI double by Samantha Roberts down the rightfield line.
NSU also scored in the first inning in the first game when Kylie Roos hit a RBI single to right center to score McKenney.
SHSU immediately responded in the bottom of the inning with a three-run homer to right center by Kim Damien. SHSU added on with four runs on four hits in the third inning, with Hillary Adams' two-RBI single highlighting the framed.
The Bearkats tacked on two more to end the game in the sixth inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by Alyssa Coggins and Damien. Including the walk-off, Damien finished the game three-for-four with a double, homer, four-RBI and two runs scored.
Tomi Garrison (6-7) earned the win for SHSU and did not allow an earned run in six innings. Roos (4-10) started the game and took the loss for NSU.
The Lady Demons will take the field again on Wednesday with a road game at Louisiana Tech at 6.
