JACKSON, Miss. – Scoring was not an issue for the Northwestern State and Jackson State softball teams Tuesday night as the teams split an action-packed doubleheader, 9-8 JSU and 16-6 NSU, at the JSU Softball Complex.
Samantha Roberts blasted three home runs in the second game to lead the charge, as NSU (12-16, 1-1 SLC) scored in every inning to run away with the win over JSU (16-15, 0-0 SWAC). Tara McKenney registered three hits, including two doubles and four-RBI, while Brianna Rodriguez knocked three singles.
In the first game, the teams were tied 3-3 heading into the seventh inning when Cheyenne DeLaGarza's three-RBI double seemingly broke the game open to give the Lady Demons the 8-3 lead. The Tigers topped it though in the bottom of the inning with six runs on six hits, capped by Amanda Vasquez's two-run walk-off homer.
Blair Beard extended her hitting streak to nine games after punching a single up the middle in both contests. McKenney is close behind on a seven-game hitting streak and finished a combined four-for-eight in the two games with three runs scored.
The night cap was filled with big hits for NSU, as DeLaGarza and Cali Burke each ripped a double. Burke recorded her fifth multi-hit game of the year, while Kylie Roos hit her first multi-hit game with a pair of singles and two-RBI.
Roos (4-8) also picked up the win after striking out seven batters in six innings. Sara Aasness tossed a perfect inning of relief. Kelee Grimes (5-7) took the loss in the first game after pitching 0.1 innings. Brooke Boening started and threw six strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
NSU will take the field again on Friday as it hosts McNeese State at 6 p.m. at the Lady Demon Diamond Complex. The second game of the series will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
