WACO, Texas – The Northwestern State softball team dropped a pair of games, both by the score of 3-0, in a doubleheader to No. 9 Baylor at Getterman Stadium Tuesday evening.

Cassandra Barefield stood out at the plate for NSU (2-8) tallying a hit in each game, but the Lady Demons just couldn't get the clutch swing it needed against strong Baylor (8-1) pitching.

In the second game, Kelee Grimes (1-4) stood strong on the mound, but one misfire led to the decisive three-run homer by Baylor's Clare Hosack. Grimes struckout six batters in five innings, but took the loss. Courtney Repka (3-0) earned the win for the Bears.

Brooke Boening pitched an inning relief, setting the Bears down in order in the sixth inning.

The Lady Demons had their best chance to score in the third inning when Barefield led it off with a double. Candice Biggs placed a single down the leftfield line, and Tara McKenney reached on an error to load the bases with one out. Though, Repka was able to get out of it after getting the next two batters to flyout to shallow center and groundout to third.

In the top of the fourth, NSU threatened when Sam Roberts singled up the middle and advanced to second after Barefield walked with two outs. However, Repka again was able to escape after a key strikeout.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bears took advantage of a single and walk when Hosack hit the big three-run homer to left center with one out.

In the first game, Kylie Roos (1-4) pitched six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with no walks or strikeouts, but recorded the loss. Whitney Canion (4-0) earned the win for Baylor by throwing a complete game, one-hit shutout and struckout 13.

Canion had a perfect game going through four innings until she plunked Brianna Rodriguez to leadoff the fifth inning. After Shenequia Abby came in to pitch-run, Barefield advanced her to second with a single to leftfield. Though, the Lady Demons just couldn't get the key hit and Canion was able to get out of the jam after a strikeout and a runner-left-early call.

The Bears got on the board first in the second inning after leadoff hitter Kathy Shelton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 1-0.

Baylor added its insurance runs in the fourth inning when Shelton stepped to the plate with runners on the corners and delivered a 2-RBI double with no outs.

The Lady Demons will return to action Friday when they take on Jackson State at 10 a.m. in the first of five games at the Arkansas Fastpitch Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
