NSU shows great improvement at Jim Mize Invitational

RUSTON – Northwestern State totaled a season-high 30 top-three performances on Saturday as the men's and women's track and field teams competed in Louisiana Tech's annual Jim Mize Invitational.
 
Freshmen Lionel Ellison and Hanoj Carter and sophomore Emmanuel Williams all had record days in their respective events.
 
Ellison cleared a personal-best 6-08 in the high jump to finish first, Carter sprinted to a first place finish in the 200m with a personal-fastest time of 20.62 and Williams also took first in the long jump, leaping for a career best 24-08.50.
 
Senior Wayne Douglas (triple jump, 50-06.25) and freshman Mitch Landry (3000m, 9:06.07) also gave first-place performances for the Demons.
 
Aaron Williams leapt 48-07.50 in the triple jump and Justin Walker finished the 100m dash in 10.42 as both athletes finished second in their events.
 
The NSU men's 4x100 relay team of Walker, Carter, Karllis Perry and Kendal Taylor combined to run 40.37 for a second place finish.
 
Chris Dever finished third in the shot put (44-11) and the discus (142-08) while high jumpers Alex Washington and Thomas Moore tied for third after clearing a height of 6-02.75 to round out field events for the men's team.
 
Carter had another stellar performance in the 100m dash, placing third in 10.52 and Taylor took third in the 200m, crossing the finish line at 21.18.
 
Other third place finishers for the Demons include Brent Giddens in the 400m hurdles (56.49), Lawrence Jackson in the 800m run (1:59.06), Albert Gladney in the 1500m (4:04.47) and Jeremy Elliott in the 3000m (9:41.95).
 
On the women's side, Janae Allen, Karensa Ellis and Aly Coughlin all notched first place marks.
 
Allen won the hammer throw and the discus with marks of 167-08 and 159-01, respectively. She also grabbed second place in the shot put, throwing for a mark of 44-11.
 
Ellis finished the 1500m in 4:47.45 and Coughlin ran the 3000m in 11:16.67.
 
Jessica Talley placed second in the javelin in her first outing since the 2011 season with a throw of 144-11 and Quiana Griffin took second in the 400m dash in a season-best 55.68.
 
Freshman Rechelle Bessard finished third in the hammer; throwing for 131-03 and Sarah Jones registered the third best long jump mark at 18-11.25.

Also notching third place finishes for the Lady Demons were Delanie Nock in the javelin (114-02), Angelica Kotun in the 200m dash (24.51) and Ali Fontenot in the 3000m run (11:38.15).
