Box Score LORMAN, Miss. -- Newcomers
Kaylee Guidry and
Baylee Gray combined on a five-inning no-hitter, the 16th in the program's 33-year history, to start Northwestern State's softball team to a doubleheader sweep at Alcorn State, with the Lady Demons whipping the Lady Braves 8-0 and 12-1 Wednesday.
The Lady Demons (8-2) got five RBI on three hits, including a three-run homer, from
Cassandra Barefield in the opener, then broke open the second game with a five-run fifth inning against Alcorn State (1-8).
Guidry (2-1), a junior transfer from Walker and LSU-Eunice, struck out four while pitching the first three innings in the opener. Gray, a freshman from Mansfield, Texas-Mansfield Legacy, fanned five in a row while keeping Alcorn hitless in the last two innings as the game ended on the eight-run mercy rule. Alcorn's only baserunner was the first batter Gray faced, Raven Riggs, who drew an inning-opening walk.
The last NSU no-hitter also came against Alcorn State when
Kelee Grimes pitched the gem on April 6, 2011. Wednesday's was only the second combined no-no in school history, preceded by a perfect game, one of six all-time for the Lady Demons, by Crista Miller and Amanda Ortego against Centenary on Feb. 22, 2001.
“Obviously it's great to have outstanding pitching performances and we got that today. These were good wins to have,” said head coach
Donald Pickett. “It's never easy to go on the road and win.”
NSU started fast in the opener as it picked up three runs in the second inning with RBI by Barefield,
Jordan Palmer and
Tara McKenney.
The Lady Demons doubled the lead in the third when Barefield rocked a two-out home run to right center, pushing NSU up 6-0.
In the fifth,
Kylie Roos was hit by a pitch.
Natalie Landry doubled to left field, sending Roos home. Landry advanced to third on a wild pitch before Barefield singled her home to seal the win after Gray kept Alcorn silent in the bottom of the inning.
The Lady Demons started much slower in the second game as they played through two scoreless innings. In the third,
Shenequia Abby singled to right field before
Brittany Virgoe tripled, putting NSU up 1-0.
The Lady Demons broke open the game in the fifth inning, collecting five RBI on three hits.
Brianna Rodriguez tripled in the sixth, followed by a sacrifice fly by Roos to give NSU one more run, putting them up 7-0.
The Lady Braves picked up their only run of the day in the bottom of the sixth on two NSU throwing errors.
Northwestern State responded with five runs on six hits in the seventh inning to create the 12-1 advantage.
McKenney led the Lady Demons with two hits and three RBI, followed by Rodriguez with three hits and an RBI.
Senior
Paige Cavallin (1-0) worked five solid innings in the circle, striking out five and allowing five hits. Gray threw for two innings, striking out four of the six batters she faced.
The Lady Demons continue their stint on the road this weekend as they travel to the Southern Mississippi tournament to face the host Golden Eagles on Friday at six o'clock. They make their homefield debut March 1-3 in the Natchitoches Historic District Development Commission Lady Demon Classic.
