NATCHITOCHES—New head coach Alan Frey has started rounding out his coaching staff with the addition of Alex Frazier as associate head coach Friday afternoon.
The hire is subject to approval by the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System, which governs Northwestern State University.
A rising star in the coaching profession, Frazier comes to NSU after a season as an assistant coach at Denver, where she helped lead the Pioneers to tie for their best record in the past six seasons.
This past season, she was recognized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association as a 30 under 30 honoree. The 30 under 30 program recognizes 30 up-and-coming women's basketball coaches under the age of 30.
"I'm just so excited to have Alex join us here at Northwestern," Frey said. "She has so many amazing strengths, but the one that impresses me most is how she builds and maintains relationships that make such a difference in recruiting. Her energy in every part of this job is truly infectious."
Specializing in point guards, Frazier was instrumental in the development of Coryn Watts while at UD, as Watts bumped her scoring average by nearly 13 points from her freshman to sophomore season, posting 19.6 points per game, which led the Pioneers and earned her First Team All-Conference.
In addition to her development, she also oversaw baseline and out of bounds plays.
Prior to her season at Denver, she spent the 2024-25 season as the recruiting coordinator at Monmouth, where she continued her relationship with Coach Frey that began when he was recruiting her as a high school student athlete in Georgia.
She was known for her tremendous recruiting efforts, which helped her land an assistant job at Denver the following season.
While with Monmouth, she managed the recruiting budget for both high school recruiting and the transfer portal recruiting, which is the new world of college basketball.
A bulldog on the recruiting trail, she helped Monmouth land a Division II All-American as well as the top player in the state of New Jersey.
Like she did at her last stop at Denver, she played a role in developing point guards and combo guards. At Monmouth, she helped develop guard Damaris Rodriguez, who averaged 14.6 points and 3.5 assists per game to earn her a First Team All-Conference selection.
To begin her post-graduate coaching career, she spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Appalachian State.
There, she helped devise a defensive gameplan for every opponent. In her second season in 2023-24, ASU went 17-15 and earned a berth in the Sun Belt Tournament semifinals.
She helped develop players to become all-conference players in the Sun Belt as well as helping with recruiting.
Frazier began her coaching journey at her alma mater East Carolina, where she held three jobs in three seasons, working her way up from graduate assistant to assistant director of basketball operations to director of recruiting in her final season in 2021-22.
Throughout her young career, she has helped develop seven players who compete professionally, six have received all-conference honors and 19 are academic honor roll selections.
Frazier is a two-time graduate of ECU, where she was a four-year starting point guard and three-time team captain. She earned team MVP in 2019 and was a three-time member of the all-academic team.
