COMMERCE, Texas—Northwestern State aims to rebound from its loss last time out when it wraps up its road trip with a visit to East Texas A&M for a Saturday matinee.
Tip-off is at 2:30 p.m. at the East Texas A&M Field House. It can be viewed on ESPN+ or fans can listen to it on KZBL 100.7 FM.
NSU (11-10, 8-5) went cold in the fourth quarter during the loss at Lamar on Thursday evening, shooting 1-of-13.
"It is a new day," head coach
Anna Nimz said. "It is a new opportunity to grow, get better and compete against a very good team."
The Demons have shown the ability to come back from losses, going 7-2 in games following defeats. They will need that again as NSU is in the thick of a jumbled middle of the Southland Conference standings.
The fourth place through sixth place teams—NSU, Stephen F. Austin and UIW—are separated by just one game, with seventh-place East Texas A&M (10-10, 6-7) just a game and a half back.
This is the first meeting between the two schools this season, as what was supposed to be the first matchup last month in Natchitoches was rescheduled for Feb. 16. It is the last SLC opponent the Demons have not yet faced.
A key matchup is
Vernell Atamah against East Texas A&M's Tiani Ellison, as both rank in the six during Southland play in both points and rebounding, two of the three people in the conference who can say that.
Atamah comes in averaging 17.5 points per game, which ranks second during SLC play, while Ellison is right behind her at 16.3, which is third.
Ellison is coming off a game in which she posted a massive double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds in the win at Stephen F. Austin, a victory in which she scored the game-winning layup with three seconds remaining.
Atamah, on the other hand, scored a team-high 16 points in the loss at Lamar, making two more 3-pointers, as she closes in on the top 10 for single season 3-pointers made.
Like many games, taking care of the ball is a key point of emphasis for the Demons, as the Lions are plus-one in the turnover margin department.
NSU is coming off a 2-for-18 performance from deep at Lamar, while East Texas A&M can be hit or miss with the 3-point shot. In the last six games, the Lions have shot at least 40 percent from deep twice and less than 20 percent in the other four contests.
East Texas A&M was able to overcome a 3-for-21 display from deep in the win at SFA. The Lions have made double digit 3-pointers twice and also three or fewer triples five times.
Reza Po is the reigning SLC Player of the Week after she averaged nearly 30 points per game, including pouring in 33 against New Orleans in a home win.
Following the trip to Commerce, the Demons are spending much of the remainder of the season at Prather Coliseum, as six of the final eight are at home. That includes a five-game homestand, which is Feb. 12 against league-leading McNeese.
