BEAUMONT, Texas – The Northwestern State tennis team completed a dominant road trip through Texas, securing a 6-1 victory over Lamar on Monday morning to remain undefeated in Southland Conference play.
Following a 6-1 win over UIW on Saturday, the Lady Demons (6-6, 6-0) carried their momentum into Beaumont, showcasing depth and resilience in both singles and doubles play against the Cardinals.
"These are two big wins on the road," said head coach Marcos Morelli. "The girls demonstrated resilience and a strong willingness to compete through every challenge."
Northwestern State started strong in doubles, clinching the opening point with commanding wins.
The duo of Sofi Garcia and Ayu Ishibashi delivered a flawless 6-0 victory over Martina Alcaino and Savannah Bijlsma.
Pika Doberlet and Tjasa Klevisar secured a 6-2 win against Megan Do and Asta Miettinen.
The final match, featuring Zoi Spyrou and Honoka Umeda, was left unfinished at 5-4, with NSU getting the point in doubles.
The Lady Demons carried their dominance into singles play, winning five of six matches.
Garcia was untouchable in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Emma Palus at the No. 6 spot to double the Lady Demons advantage.
At the No. 2 spot, Umeda overpowered Miettinen 6-0, 6-2, to push the lead to 3-0 and put Northwestern State on the brink of victory.
Ishibashi continued her strong form with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 spot over Alcaino and clinch the Lady Demons sixth consecutive conference triumph.
Lamar's lone point came at the No. 1 singles spot, where Arina Gudovskaya edged out Spyrou in a tight 7-6(6), 6-4 contest, to cut the Lady Demons lead to 4-1 before Northwestern State came back to win the final two.
Klevisar fought back after dropping the first set to defeat Do in a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 at the No. 3 spot to make it 5-1 before Doberlet finished off the match by also pulling out a thriller, outlasting Bijlsma 6-4, 2-6, 12-10 in the No. 5 position.
"It was a hard-fought match," said Morelli. "Doberlet and Klevisar showed great resilience, battling back to win in three sets, which was a big moment for them. Lamar competed well and displayed a lot of toughness."
The Lady Demons take another break before traveling to Nacogdoches with the top seed on the line against Stephen F. Austin, which is second in the conference standings. The match begins April 5 at 1 p.m. at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
