THIBODAUX – Fresh off its first win of the season, the Northwestern State women's tennis team aims to keep the momentum going as it travels to Thibodaux to take on Nicholls in another key Southland Conference matchup Monday.
First serve is set for 10 a.m. at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
The Lady Demons (1-5, 1-0) are coming off a thrilling 4-3 victory over New Orleans in their conference opener, where strong doubles play and standout singles performances proved decisive.
Pika Doberlet was dominant at No. 5 singles, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Iris Danne, while
Ayu Ishibashi put on a flawless display at No. 6 singles, blanking Ananya Dhankhar 6-0, 6-0.
Maria Farina delivered the match-clinching point for the Lady Demons, rallying for a gritty 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Nouray Khaled.
Northwestern State secured the early advantage in doubles, with Doberlet and
Tjasa Klevisar winning 6-4 at No. 1, while
Zoi Spyrou and
Sofi Garcia sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 3.
Meanwhile, Nicholls (2-3, 0-1) will be searching for their first conference win of the season after falling to Stephen F. Austin in their last outing, 7-0.
"We expect to perform well in both doubles and singles," says head coach
Marcos Morelli. "This will give us the best chance of success Monday."
The last time these two teams met, the Lady Demons dominated the Colonels 6-1, increasing their win streak over Nicholls to 10.
Both teams are eager to make a statement in Southland Conference play.
Following the match, they head home to begin their conference home slate with a contest against SLC newcomer UTRGV on Saturday to start a stretch of three consecutive at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
