Lady Demons down Islanders, stay undefeated in Conference play

NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State Lady Demons delivered one of the biggest wins in recent program history, taking down Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-3 on Monday at the Jack Fisher Lady Demon Complex.

The victory not only extended NSU's unbeaten record in Southland Conference play, but it also snapped the Islanders' 28-match winning streak in conference play, a dominance that stretched back over multiple seasons.

The Lady Demons (4-5, 4-0) claimed victory despite dropping the doubles point to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (12-2, 2-1), as Northwestern State won four of the six singles matches.

Despite losing the doubles point, NSU's strength in singles play proved to be the difference, as they stormed back to take four crucial matches to clinch the victory.

Tjasa Klevisar set the tone early at No. 3 singles, dismantling Yana Mykytyn 6-1, 6-1 to put NSU on the board.

Zoi Spyrou continued her impressive form at the No. 1 spot, delivering a 6-2, 7-5, win over Ana Veroux to put the Lady Demons in front for the first time.

Northwestern State made it 3-1, as Sofi Garcia was dominant at No. 6 singles, rolling past Juliette Jalai 6-0, 6-3 to put the Demons on the brink of the big win.

Ayu Ishibashi was down in spot No. 5 to Josefa Fuenzalida 6-4, 4-6, 2-5 before retiring, giving the Islanders their first win in singles play and making the score 3-2 in the home teams' favor.

Honoka Umeda showed her resilience at No. 2 singles, bouncing back from a second-set loss to defeat Leticia Tarocco 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 to clinch the fourth point and the match win for the Lady Demons, their second victory in the last eight meetings with the Islanders.

To round out the afternoon, Ramanouskaya outlasted Maria Farina in a three-set thriller 6-1, 6-7 (7-9), 10-7 in the No. 4 spot.

The Islanders secured the doubles point to begin the afternoon, as Ramanouskaya and Mykytyn defeated Pika Doberlet and Klevisar 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Josefa Fuenzalida and Leticia Tarocco handled Farina and Garcia 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

The No. 3 doubles match featuring Spyrou and Umeda against Ana Veroux and Juliette Jalai was left unfinished at 3-3 when A&M-CC took the point in doubles.

The Lady Demons now sit at 4-0 in conference play, positioning themselves as serious contenders for the Southland title.

"We always talk about processing doubles and staying consistent in singles," Morelli said. "After losing doubles, we regrouped, and that is why we stay consistent in singles – if we lose doubles, we still have a chance in singles."

Northwestern State looks forward to carrying this momentum as they step back out of conference to welcome Rhode Island and previous Lady Demons head coach Jonas Brobeck to the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex on Wednesday with the first serve at 11 a.m.
