NATCHITOCHES, La - The Northwestern State tennis team dropped their home opener against North Texas on Sunday.
 
The Lady Demons (0-3) continue to search for their first win of the 2025 season.
 
"It's not the result we wanted or expected," second-year head coach Marcos Morelli states. "We have a lot of things to work on and improve on for the matches to come."
 
Sophomore Honoka Umeda outdueled her opponent at No. 1 singles. Umeda struggled out the gate in her first set, falling 6-3 to North Texas' Gianna Pielet, before mounting a comeback in dominating fashion, getting her second singles win of the season 3-6, 6-2, (10-2).
 
The Mean Green started the day by picking up two out of the three wins against the Demons in doubles.
 
Freshman Pika Doberlet and senior Tjasa Klevisar continue showcasing their chemistry with a win against UNT's Gianna Pielet and Olivia Malm 6-3.
 
Newcomers Zoi Spyrou and Valeria Ortega took the court together losing to UNT's Lou Chalard and Marina Adati 6-3.
 
The doubles point came down to Umeda and fellow sophomore Maria Farina in a hard-fought battle against the Mean Green's Lilly Schultz and Stanislava Shulzhenko, losing 7-6 (7-5).
 
Ortega dropped her match at No. 5 singles against UNT's Olivia Malm 6-2, 6-1.
 
Klevisar struggled in her singles matchup at No. 3 with the Mean Green's Stanislava Shulzhenko, losing, 6-2, 6-1.
 
Spyrou fell to UNT's Stadfany Nformi 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
 
Doberlet fell at No. 6 singles to the Mean Green's Lilly Schultz 7-5, 6-2.
 
Farina battled it out at No. 4 against UNT's Lou Chalard, losing in three sets 2-6, 6-2,(10-6).
 
"We need to compete better in singles and be more consistent throughout the match," Morelli states.
 
The Lady Demons stay in Natchitoches to face off against LSU-Alexandria on Tuesday at 2 p.m. before heading South to Mobile, Alabama for a date against South Alabama on Friday, February 14^th at 11 a.m.
