NSU heads to Kansas to wrap up Midwest road trip

LAWRENCE, Kan.—Fresh off an impressive performance against Wichita State, the Northwestern State women's basketball team wraps up the three-game Midwest swing with a trip to Kansas on Sunday at Allen Fieldhouse.

Tip-off is at 2 p.m. and can be viewed on ESPN+.

Like the first two games, the team has a few main focuses when the team takes to the court at Kansas.

"We are continuing to focus on our team's growth on and off the court while on the road for this final game," head coach Anna Nimz said. "We want to continue to work on our poise and pace in our offensive execution while dialing up our defensive discipline."

NSU (1-1) controlled the game from start to finish in beat Wichita State 55-42 on the road Thursday evening.

Vernell Atamah, a sophomore from Mesquite, Texas, has picked up right where she left off following last season's conference freshman of the year campaign.

Atamah buried a career-high seven triples against WSU, scoring a game-high 25 points in leading the Demons to the victory. It was the most triples by an NSU player since Jiselle Woodson also drained seven 3-pointers against Texas A&M-Commerce (now East Texas A&M) in the Southland Conference Tournament on March 6, 2023.

That performance comes on the heels of a 20-point showing at Nebraska in the season opener. It is the first time an NSU player has scored at least 20 points in each of her first two games since Beatrice Attura did so against LeTourneau (21) and LSU-Alexandria (24) to begin the 2016-17 season.

Atamah's 10 total 3-pointers leads the Southland Conference

Clarence Djuela is coming off one of the best games of her career, nearly posting a double-double with six points and a career-high 12 rebounds in the win over WSU.

Newcomers Tiara Abron and Nya Valentine are tied for second on the team in points, as both are averaging 7.5 points per contest.

One of the largest reasons for the success was taking care of the ball, as following the first half of the Nebraska game, NSU coughed up the ball just 17 times over the next five quarters—seven in the second half at Nebraska and 10 through the first three periods in the victory over WSU.

While NSU has played two games so far, KU (1-0) has played just one so far, a 74-64 home win over Kansas City this past Wednesday.

The Jayhawks return four starters from last season and much like the 2024-25 campaign, KU was led by S'Mya Nichols in game one, as she dropped in 21 points in the win.

Three Jayhawks scored in double figures, as Nichols was joined by Regan Williams (18) and Jaliya Davis (10).

"To have success against this very good KU team, we need everyone to connect on the wide-open shots," Nimz said. "No missed opportunities on our 2-foot shots or uncontested perimeter looks."

Following the game, NSU heads back to Natchitoches for its first two home games this season, starting with welcoming Champion Christian to Prather Coliseum for a Nov. 15 game.
