Confident NSU hosts Arkansas Baptist

NATCHITOCHES—Confidence is high for Northwestern State after a pair of victories, including a record-breaking win last game, and giving Kansas a four-quarter game on the road.

The Demons (2-2) take that confidence into Friday's game against Arkansas Baptist (6-0) in their final home contest of the non-conference schedule.

Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m. at Prather Coliseum and can fans who cannot attend can watch the game on ESPN+.

"With the new faces we have, it's about us and us gelling and us connecting and figuring out how to put each other in good positions," head coach Anna Nimz said. "The girls are coming off a nice win, doing things that have not been done here.

"But at the end of the day, we still have a lot of areas where we need to grow and develop, not only Friday, but also as our non-conference continues and then the Southland starts Dec. 7."

Last time out, NSU posted one of its best offensive performances in school history, putting up 108 points in a 108-30 victory over Ecclesia. The 78-point win is the largest margin of victory in program history, and the 108 points are the most since pouring in 113 against Louisiana College in December 2016.

In addition to that, the Demons also dropped a school-record 18 3-pointers in the victory, led by Vernell Atamah's five made triples and game-high 22 points. Her 18 made triples through four games this season are the third-most in the NCAA and tops among players who have played fewer than five games.

Her 22-point outing against Ecclesia gives her 86 total points this season and she has scored at least 20 in three of the four games. The 86 points are the most in the first four games of a season since Diamond Cosby's 92 in 2003-04.

Alexis Calderon collected her first points of the season, pouring in 14 points, draining four of the 18 triples for the Demons. Nya Valentine and Payton Miller each made three 3-pointers, the latter of which scored a career-high 12 points.

In addition to Calderon, Momina Kassim, Cimiya Rideaux and Mika Jarrett also scored their first points of the season, with Rideaux scoring the first points of her career.

While the scoring has been impressive, NSU's 31 assists last game were the most in more than two decades.

"It's fun to watch them play because they are always looking for the other girl," Nimz said. "They are always looking to make one more pass. Sometimes I think we are too pass-happy, and we've been working on that this week. But that is an impressive stat. We've talked about the firepower we have, but that firepower is always looking for another player. That is a good recipe for success."

ABC has played a pair of DI games so far this season as exhibitions for the Lady Buffs, an 81-65 loss to Alcorn State on Nov. 12 and a 121-40 loss at Grambling on Oct. 29.

Four Lady Buffs average in double figures, led by Jade Fry (18.0 ppg) and Emani Wofford (17.7 ppg).

After not playing in ABC's first two games of the season, Fry has scored at least 14 points in her four games this season, including a pair of 20-point games. She also shoots 43.8 percent from deep.

Following the match, the Demons head off to the Sunshine State for the Emerald Coast Classic, playing Virginia on Monday before playing either Nebraska again or Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday.
