Spyrou claims Flight title as Lady Demons close fall play in Beaumont

BEAUMONT, Texas – Northwestern State tennis closed out its fall season at the Joe Pyburn Invitational on Sunday with senior Zoi Spyrou winning the Flight A East singles championship to highlight the Lady Demons' final day of fall competition.

"We got another good opportunity to compete this weekend," head coach Marcos Morelli said. "The level was solid, but we still need to keep working and sharpening details."

Spyrou turned in one of the most complete performances of the tournament, defeating Louisiana Tech's Nina Skoric 6-1, 6-4 to secure the flight title. The senior controlled the match from the opening serve, jumping out to an early lead and finishing off a straight-sets win to cap an unbeaten run in Beaumont.

"Zoi is a very hard worker," Morelli said. "She brings energy and effort every single day, and this is the kind of result that comes from that. She's earned it."

NSU placed multiple players in championship matches across the board after a strong first two days of play.

Freshman Martina Acebedo Bonocore advanced to the Flight B East final before withdrawing.

In Flight C East, Athina Grigoriadou fell 6-3, 6-3 to McNeese's Elena Morales Dorantes in the final.

On the opposite side of the Flight C draw, Maria Farina advanced to the West final via bye before withdrawing.

In Flight D West, Lolita Hukasian also reached the final before withdrawing.

"It was a good fall," Morelli said. "We played good competition, and the team improved in the way we competed in both singles and doubles. You could see the growth from the first tournament to this one."

NSU was also represented in all three doubles finals on Sunday.

The duo of Spyrou and Acebedo Bonocore reached the Flight B East final before falling 6-3 to Louisiana Tech's Diana Starodubtseva and Maria Tsironi.

In Flight A West, Honoka Umeda and Grigoriadou dropped a 6-2 result to McNeese's Erica Hagi and Ana Hollweg.

Farina and Hukasian fell 6-2 in the Flight B West final to Louisiana Tech's Mio Kozaki and Skoric.

"The biggest takeaway is the importance of doing the right things early and setting the tone," Morelli said. "When we start with the right habits, we put ourselves in position to win."

The Lady Demons finished the weekend with one singles flight championship, four singles finalists and three doubles finalist pairings, wrapping up a productive three-day event against regional and conference opponents.

"I'm excited to see the girls compete in the spring," Morelli said. "If we keep building on this, we'll be ready."

NSU concluded its fall schedule with the strong showing in Beaumont and will now turn its focus to the upcoming spring season.
