NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State continued its winning streak by defeating Sam Houston 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex. 

After being down 1-0 on all the doubles courts, NSU (3-2) came back and claimed the doubles point, winning on court Nos. 2 and 3. 

Sam Houston easily took No.1 in doubles, defeating Sara Erenda and Sofi Garcia 6-1. 

However, NSU fought back. Ayu Ishibashi and Honoka Umeda tied the doubles point on No. 3, 6-4, coming back after being down 3-2. 

On No. 2, Tjasa Klevisar and Maria Farina had a close set, tied at 5-5 with Vianne Schwab and Roberta Sechi before dominating that last two games to earn the match win and clinch the doubles point for NSU. 

To start singles play, Klevisar, in the No. 1 position, took down Megan Basson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. 

Sam Houston's, Paula Cerda was able to knock down Paige Wise on No. 2 to cut the Lady Demons lead to 2-1. 

The teams had a third set on the back four courts. The Lady Demons lost the first set on three out of the four courts. 

In the No. 5 position, Garcia dominated in the second set, 6-1, after falling 6-4 to Aaliyah Hohmann in the first. 

Garcia won three straight games after being down 5-0 in the third, before dropping the last game and the Bearkats tied the match 2-2. 

From there, NSU took control. Ishibashi took the first set 7-5 after climbing from behind 5-4. After losing the second set, she was neck and neck with India Fenieys for most of the third set before taking the lead and give NSU a 3-2 lead. 

Umeda and Farina finished the match for NSU with straight set and third set wins on No. 3 and 6. 

Northwestern State will be back on the courts Feb. 17, as they are set to host Tarleton State at noon.
