Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After almost a four-hour rain delay, the Lady Demons fell to the Islanders in a 4-3 defeat.
The match started at 11 a.m. with doubles but was quickly called off at 11:24 a.m. due to heavy rain. The match picked back up at a little after three with doubles, which turned out to be the deciding point in the tight match.
The Lady Demons lost the doubles point on Nos. 1 (6-2) and 2 (6-4), forcing No. 3 to be unfinished.
NSU (8-7, 0-2 SLC) was down 3-0 before forcing four courts into three sets, trying to complete a furious comeback. The rally fell just short, as the Lady Demons won three of the four and the Islanders came away with the victory.
"Congratulations to Corpus," head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "It was a battle today, which they won. We have to get back to the drawing board and assess some things.
"Tjasa, Paige, and Mariella did a great job today doing things we have worked on from start to finish. We need to rest up, assess some things, and get back to work. There are no moral victories and Southland is very close and competitive this year."
In the top slot, Tjasa Klevisar fell to Emma Aucagne 6-3 in the first set before showing us her abilities in the second and third sets, coming back to win the match, handing the Islanders top singles player her first loss of the season.
Klevisar is 10-4 in singles this season and is 7-2 at the top of the lineup.
Paige Wise won the back-and-forth first set on No. 3 7-5, before falling 6-2 against Sofia Pinto. Wise allowed Pinto only one point in the third set to win her match.
Mariella Minetti used all three sets to win her game in the No. 6 slot, winning her second consecutive match, rounding back into All-Conference form.
Northwestern State will return home Friday for a 1 p.m. first serve against Lamar.
