SAN MARCOS, Texas – Another meet, another record for Northwestern State thrower
Djimon Gumbs.
Gumbs broke his own NSU standard in the discus Thursday with a mark of 187-10 to win the Bobcat Invitational at Texas State.
The junior tossed his record mark on the second attempt to assure himself a spot in the final three attempts, and he bested the 34-thrower field by more than three feet.
Gumbs, the reigning Southland Conference Field Athlete of the Week, said his previous record throw of 183-11 occurred from the crowd energy as opposed to be a technically sound attempt.
NSU coach
Mike Heimerman said Gumbs' throws were more technically sound Thursday.
"We still need to work on the finish a little bit, but we're technically very happy with the throw," Heimerman said. "There were a lot of big throwers who didn't throw far because of the wind, but Djimon was able to use the wind to his advantage by keeping his throw down.
"The wind died right before his third throw, and had the 15-20 mile-per-hour wind still been there, he could have thrown 200 feet. He's gained a lot of confidence, and multiple coaches were telling him he could have went 200."
The 187-10 mark ranks 15
th nationally heading into the weekend.
NSU's
Diamante Gumbs just missed the finals, placing 10
th with a throw of 161-7.
Tarajh Hudson tossed 157 feet to finish 13
th as all three throwers finished near the top third of the field.
Payten Vidourek also fared well in his first collegiate 1500-meter race, placing 17
th in a 61-runner field with a 4:00.43.
"It's his first outdoor meet for us because he got hurt in indoor last year, and the year before was COVID-19," Heimerman said. "We're looking forward to what he'll do for us this season in the 1500."
The Demons and Lady Demons will have a full slate of action at the Texas Relays and the Bobcat Invitational on Friday with finals for both meets on Saturday.
