Box Score FORT WORTH, Texas – Northwestern State opened its season with a 6-1 win against UT Tyler on Saturday at the outdoor courts at TCU.
After dropping opening sets at the top of the singles rotation, NSU's Rozalie Dohnalova and
Tjasa Klevisar roared back to win the next two sets and help the Lady Demons claim five of the six singles points.
Dohnalova rebounded from a 6-1 first-set loss to claim a 7-5 and 10-4 (super tiebreaker) win over the Patriots' Zamani in the No. 1 spot.
Klevsisar shook off a tiebreaker loss 7-6 (5) in the first set to cruise to a 6-2 second-set win before taking the super tiebreaker 10-5 over Brooklyn Ross in the No. 2 slot.
NSU (1-0) had already clinched the match victory thanks to three early singles points along with the doubles point.
"This was a good match to start the season, and I thought we got better the longer the match went," said NSU coach
Jonas Brobeck. "Credit to UT Tyler in that they're a very good team who made it tough for us.
"Tjasa and Rozi started a bit slow but worked themselves into the match and improved a lot the deeper the match went. That's normal for the first match of the season, and I'm proud they came out on top."
The Lady Demons swept the first three singles points with wins from No. 3
Mariella Minetti, No. 4
Ayu Ishibashi and No. 5 Viktorie Wojkicova.
Minetti (6-2, 6-2) and Wojkicova (6-3, 6-1) cruised to their wins while Ishibashi fought off a second-set challenge in a 6-2, 7-5 win for the clinching point.
Ishibashi, Klevisar and Dohnalova earned points in their first NSU dual matches.
UT Tyler claimed its lone point in the No. 6 spot when Chloe Chawner defeated
Gig Kanaphuet 6-4, 6-3.
NSU took two of three doubles matches to earn the first point.
Wojcikova/Dohnalova soared to a 6-2 win before the pairing of Kanaphuet/Ishibashi captured a 7-6 (3) win to seal the first point.
NSU faced the Patriots on TCU's outdoor courts in chilly weather Saturday, but the Lady Demons will have the comfort of TCU's indoor facility when they square off against the Horned Frogs (2-0) Sunday at 10 a.m.
"I think the girls handled the conditions well today, and I'm excited that all of our new Lady Demons got wins in their first dual matches," Brobeck said. "We're facing a good TCU team (Sunday), but our main objective is to get better with each match."
