In just his second season at the helm, Jonas Brobeck led Northwestern State to an undefeated Southland Conference record and a regular season title.

The regular season title is the program’s first since 2014, and Brobeck did it with three freshmen in his top four singles slots. That freshmen class lived up to its No. 9 mid-major ranking coming in, according to TennisRecruiting.net.

NSU’s 15 wins is tied for eighth-best in program history with its .750 winning percentage (15-5) tied for seventh best.

The Lady Demons went on a 10-match winning streak before falling in the SLC Tournament semifinals to NJIT. The winning streak is third-longest in program history.

All six NSU regulars were honored in some way on the All-Southland Conference team. NSU placed three first-team singles players and one first-team doubles pairing.

Brobeck built on a 5-5 mark in SLC play in his first season.

In that season, Emilija Dancetovic showed vast improvement as she capped her career with All-Southland and All-Louisiana honors.

Judit Castillo Gargallo finished her career No. 8 on the career singles all-time wins list with 54, including 27 wins in Brobeck’s time on staff.

Before assuming the head coaching role, Brobeck served for two seasons as an assistant on Patric DuBois’ staff. NSU placed second in the Southland Conference in 2019.

The Stockholm, Sweden native worked with tennis youth at Nasbypark Tennis Club in his home country for three years. He worked with teen players daily in individual and group settings, also serving as a travel coach for top juniors during regional, national and ITF tournaments.

Additionally, Brobeck coached two professional players from the club, Christoffer Solberg and Anette Munozova.

After a college playing career at UNC-Asheville, Brobeck was a volunteer coach at his alma mater for a season before becoming an assistant coach at Morehead State, coaching in Kentucky for two seasons.

Brobeck was an all-conference player in the Big South, leading UNC-Asheville to a program-best second-place finish as a senior team captain.

His father Michael was a professional tennis coach for 20 years and the Fed Cup coach for the Swedish Tennis Federation.

Brobeck holds a master’s degree from NSU in sports administration.
