FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Northwestern State softball team discovered its bats during the second game of the Wooo Pig Classic Friday at Bogle Park. The Lady Demons plated five runs, four in the first inning, against No. 20 Arkansas in its own ballpark.
However, that wasn't enough to come out victorious, as NSU dropped a 13-5 decision to the red-hot Razorbacks — winners of 14 in a row — in six innings. That defeat occurred after the Lady Demons fell to Drake 12-2 in five innings in their first game of the tournament.
The results push NSU's record to 6-4 on the season.
While the Lady Demons fell in both contests, it wasn't without offense, and early offense at that. NSU — which hadn't yet scored in the first inning this season — tallied four runs in the top of the first against Arkansas.
Three of those were courtesy of sophomore catcher Alexis Perry. She registered her first home run of the season, clearing the left field wall.
Perry wasn't the one Lady Demon to boast a homer on the day. Senior outfielder Kaitlyn St. Clair hit her second home run of the season, a solo shot in the game against the Bulldogs.
Northwestern State continues play at the Wooo Pig Classic on Saturday. The Lady Demons battle Kansas at 12:30 p.m. and follow that with a 3 p.m. game against Arkansas.
No. 20 Arkansas 13, NSU 5 (6 innings)
Perry gave NSU a crooked number in the first inning, but first blood was drawn just before that. Freshman infielder Kat Marshall singled home junior E.C. Delafield for the game's first run.
The Razorbacks had the answer and quickly. They plated six runs in the bottom half of the first.
Arkansas logged a three-run third inning and then a four-run sixth to end the contest. NSU's only answer was an RBI from freshman infielder Keely DuBois in the fifth frame.
Drake 12, NSU 2 (5 innings)
Perry laid claim to half of the Lady Demons' RBIs against the Bulldogs. She knocked home Marshall, who reached on a double, with a single to left for NSU's first run of the game in the top of the second.
Perry's RBI cut Drake's lead in half at 2-1. St Clair's homer also cut into the Bulldogs' advantage, making it a 4-2 game in the top of the fourth inning.
But Drake had an answer in the bottom half of the fourth. The Bulldogs plated eight runners, and held NSU scoreless in the top half of the fifth to end the game.
