LUBBOCK, Texas –
Natashia Jackson did it again.
For the second straight week, Jackson established a Southland Conference indoor record in the women's 400 meters, clocking a 53.43 time at the Matador Qualifier at Texas Tech.
Jackson, Northwestern State's senior standout from Houston, knocked .22 seconds off the mark she established a week ago at the Tyson Invitational.
Running the first of four heats, Jackson trailed former Texas Tech All-American Sara Limp by .3 at the 200-meter split before ripping off a 28.28-second final 200 to secure the win and lower the conference mark. Jackson wound up winning the race by .34 seconds over Limp.
Her 53.43 time is the 23
rd-fastest nationally, moving Jackson up eight spots from where she entered the weekend.
"Speedy continues to impress me," said associate head coach
Adam Pennington, who traveled to Lubbock with Jackson. "She ran a great race but still has some spots we need to fix, and that gives us both confidence that she can run sub-53. She got bumped multiple times on the first lap and came through a bit slower than anticipated but ran an aggressive lap two for an easy win against one of the best 400 girls in the country. She is growing each meet and continues to improve. You can never be disappointed in a new school and conference record."
Jackson wasn't the only Lady Demon in action Friday.
Earlier in the afternoon, pole vaulter
Annemarie Broussard competed at the LSU Twilight in Baton Rouge, finishing third with a clearance of 12-11.5.
Morgann LeLeux, competing unattached, cleared 15-5 while LSU's Lisa Gunnarsson cleared 13-11.25 to finish second.
Both the Lady Demons and Demons will compete Saturday at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas. Running events begin at 4 p.m. with field events starting at 5 p.m.
