LAFAYETTE—It was a sensational indoor season for Kalen Beavers and he proved once again to be one of the best sprinters in the Southland Conference in the beginning of the outdoor season.

Beavers, a Carencro native, had two of the 11 event victories to lead Northwestern State in the final day of the Louisiana Classics on the campus of Louisiana-Lafayette.

"Kalen had another great day, as did a lot of other people," head coach Mike Heimerman said. "I was very pleased with how everyone competed with where we are in training. All four relays ran well, as did Sileena (Farrell). I mean, so many people ran well and throwers threw well and jumpers did well, I could go down the rosters and point each of them, but the story would be too long.

"It was a very impressive start to the outdoor season. I am very proud how everyone competed with the workloads that have been put on them since indoor conference. I am very pleased."

In the men's 100-meter dash, Beavers ran a personal best 10.20 to win the event before posting another personal best in the 200, clocking a 20.72, winning both events.

In the men's 100, three Demons finished in the top 10, as brother Koen Beavers (10.35) also ran a personal best to place fourth and Antoine Evans Jr. (10.39) finished ninth.

"I feel great," Beavers said. "Today obviously didn't start off how we wanted with our 4x100 relay getting messed up. After that, I knew it was time to set the tone. It feels good being able to start the season off on a high note."

Tavis Wilson (10.44) placed 14th in his first meet of the season and Brian Fisher (10.61) ran a personal best to place 20th.

Over at the 200, Will Achee (21.11) clocked a personal best to finish ninth and Kason Jones (21.77) also ran a personal best to place 21st.

On the women's side, Sileena Farrell was the only Lady Demon who competed in the 100, and made her presence felt. The senior ran a personal-best 11.47 to win the event out of 39 runners.

In the 200 on the women's side, Margaret Conteh ran a personal best with a 23.92 to win that event, as the Lady Demons went 1-2 with Shania Adderley clocking a 24.14.

Juvonna Cornette (24.34) and Layden Jack (24.78) also finished in the top 10, finishing fourth and ninth, respectively.

Nia Richards ran a personal best with a time of 24.98 to finish in 17th.

In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Dynia Lewis ran a 13.76, nearly a personal best, winning the event and leading four in the top 10.

Nia Richards (14.41) and Cherie Neal (14.83) each ran personal bests to finish fourth and ninth, respectively, Thea Ring finished in sixth place with a time of 14.46.

Brian Fisher ran a personal-best 14.22 in the men's 110-meter hurdles to finish second.

The teams also won all four relays.

In the 4x400 relay, both the men (3:09.50) and women (3:40.41) won comfortably, while they held off others in the 4x100.

The group of Evans, Wilson, Koen Beavers and Mikkel Johansson won the men's 4x100 relay with a 40.05, holding off fellow Southland Conference member New Orleans, which ran a 40.42.

The women's group of Maria Umoibang, Juvonna Cornette, Lewis and Farrell clocked a 44.95, which beat home school UL Lafayette by a half-second.

In the men's 400, Clinton Laguerre (48.86) finished eighth and Elijah Rowe (49.65) placed 11th.

While the sprinters always receive many accolades, the throwers had a fantastic day as well.

La'Darion Dudley set a personal best in the men's shot put with a toss of 58-4.50 to win the event, leading three in the top seven.

Donroy Brown (55-10.25) and Abner Johnson (51-6.25) placed third and seventh, respectively.

Johnson also did well in the hammer, as he posted a personal best with a distance of 167-10, crushing his personal best by more than three feet. In his first meet of the season, Tarajh Hudson tossed a 161-02 to place fifth.

On the women's side in the hammer, Margaret Mannering (177-07) finished second in her first outdoor collegiate meet. Ana Manousaridis (164-05) placed fifth.

The Lady Demons had four in the top six in the women's shot put, led by Ryah Dates' 48-7.50 to finish second.

She was followed by Eliska Zahadnickova (46-10.75) in third, Shakera Williams (46-10) in fourth and Shantangelo Williams (42-3.50) in sixth.

In the jumps, Roy Morris did Roy Morris things, winning another meet in the long jump, recording a jump of 23-11.75. Randy Kelly had a jump of 23-1.75 to place third.

Kelly also had a nice showing in his signature event, the high jump, clearing 6-11 to place third.

Over in the high jump, Aly Jo Warren (11-3.75) placed third on the women's side, while Bryan Lay (14-1.25) finished fifth on the men's side.

In the distance events, Lalaina Wood clocked a 2:34.64 in the women's 800-meter run and clocked a personal best with a time of 5:07.54 in the women's 1500-meter run to place 17th.

Kaden Elliott also ran a personal best in the 1500, clocking a 4:31.65.
