NATCHITOCHES—Another week, another multiple Southland Conference weekly awards for Northwestern State's track and field team.
This time around, it is a pair of first-time winners, as
Rushana Dwyer (women's track) and
Eliska Zahradnickova (women's field) took home weekly awards from the conference. This comes after three were honored by the league last week.
In the first two weeks of the outdoor season, NSU has won five of the eight weekly awards.
Zahradnickova began her strong day with her big personal best in the women's discus, the first event held at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational.
She tossed a 172-6, which not only won the event, but is also the top mark in the Southland Conference this outdoor season, which is more than eight feet better than second place, her teammate
Shakera Kirk.
Zahradnickova followed that with a second-place finish in the women's shot put, throwing a 46-5.75, which is the sixth-best mark in the Southland this season.
On the other hand,
Rushana Dwyer has continued to prove herself as arguably the top runner in the conference, winning both the 200 and 400-meter dashes.
In the 400, Dwyer finished with a conference-leading time of 53.76, which not only leads the Southland, but also lead an NSU sweep at the home meet, as she was followed by
Margaret Conteh and
Samari Finney in second and third, respectively.
Over in the 200, she clocked a 28.86. which was the top mark in the league this week and second-best time in the Southland this outdoor season.
NSU is off to the University of Florida for the Pepsi Florida Relays, a two-day event starting Friday.
